Resists arrest
COAL TOWNSHIP - Kevin S. Carsto, 21, of 1116 Chemung St., was jailed early Tuesday morning for allegedly possessing a small amount of marijuana and resisting arrest.
Coal Township police say Carsto refused officers' commands as they attempted to take him into custody. Carsto and a female not charged in the incident were discovered sleeping inside a vehicle shortly before 2 a.m. to the rear of the Bunker Hill Sports Complex. A small amount of marijuana and a piece of tin foil rolled into a smoking pipe were found inside the vehicle, police say.
Carsto is charged by Patrolman Terry Ketchem with drug possession, paraphernalia possession and resisting arrest. He was arraigned later Tuesday morning by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III, Shamokin, and released from Northumberland County Prison, Sunbury, on $5,000 unsecured bail. Patrolman David Sage assisted at the scene.
Carsto resigned in September from the county prison, where he worked as a corrections officer. In seeking release on unsecured bail, he told the judge that he had recently taken the state civil service test and that he was applying for work at a state penitentiary.
Crash
PAXINOS - Roni J. LaRose, 39, of Ranshaw, was identified Tuesday by state police at Stonington as the motorist who sustained major injuries in a crash Monday on Route 61 north of Route 487.
LaRose was listed in serious condition Tuesday at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, according to a hospital spokesman.
Police say LaRose was driving a 2013 Toyota Venza south about 4:45 p.m. when she struck the rear of a southbound 2012 Ford Escape driven by Judith A. Marose, 65, of Coal Township.
Both vehicles spun across the northbound lane, off the roadway and into an embankment, causing LaRose's vehicle to roll onto its roof.
Both LaRose and Marose were wearing seat belts, police say, as was a passenger in Marose's vehicle: 66-year-old Sharon A. Stamm of Shamokin. Neither Marose nor Stamm were injured, police said.
