Community service set for Saturday
COAL TOWNSHIP - Participants in a community service program coordinated by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Coal Bowl.
Firehouse burger fundraiser planned
SHAMOKIN - The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), Emerald Isle Division No. 1, Northumberland County, will host a fundraiser to aid their charitable works Saturday.
Beginning at 4 p.m., the group will be selling "Mayor Yurick's Famous Firehouse Burger" platters and hot dogs at the Independence Fire Company, Market and Arch streets. Takeout platters will also be available. The cost starts at $6 and all proceeds will be used for local causes.
The AOH is an Irish Catholic Fraternal Organization for men. The division, along with two others, began in Northumberland County in the 1920s. After a decades-long hiatus, a new charter was applied for and granted in October 1994. The group is currently accepting new members. Members must have Irish ancestry and be practicing Catholics.
Poet to visit Bucknell
LEWISBURG - Kendel Hippolyte is the 2014-15 Sandra and Gary Sojka Visiting Poet at Bucknell University.
As visiting poet, Hippolyte will read his poetry a 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, in the Stadler Center for Poetry, Bucknell Hall. A reception and book-signing will follow.
At noon that day he will participate in a conversation and Q&A with Stadler Center Director Shara McCallum with time allotted for audience questions. Both events are free and open to the public.
