Crash
RALPHO TOWNSHIP - A man was treated for minor injuries and a woman was taken to a hospital after a two-vehicle accident at 10:44 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Route 487 and Edgewood Drive.
Police said Harold D. Kitchen, of Catawissa, was driving a Dodge truck south on Route 487 and failed to stop for a Volkswagen Beetle driven by Megan L. Payeskie, of Catawissa, which was stopped on Route 487 to turn left onto Edgewood Drive. Kitchen's truck hit the rear of Payeskie's car, township police said.
Kitchen was treated for a slight hand injury by paramedics at the scene. Payeskie was transported to Shamokin-Geisinger Community Hospital, where she was treated and released. A passenger in Kitchen's vehicle, Elda Kitchen, of Catawissa, was uninjured.
Assisting at the scene were Elysburg Fire Department, Elysburg Fire Police, Elysburg and Knoebels Grove paramedics and Knoebels Amusement Resort personnel.
Police are investigating the crash.
Fire probes
COAL TOWNSHIP - State Police Fire Marshal Kirk Renn has ruled the fire that destroyed a home at 140 Lower Excelsior Road Friday was accidental and electrical in nature.
Renn made his determination after inspecting the home Monday. Fire officials said the fire is believed to have started in a wall near a dryer.
The fire left Rose and Thomas Rickert homeless. No injuries were reported.
SHAMOKIN - City Patrolman and Fire Investigator Raymond Siko said the cause of a blaze at 126-128 S. Vine St., Shamokin, Aug. 11 remains undetermined. He said an investigation is continuing.
Five people were left homeless in the Shamokin blaze.
Key found
COAL TOWNSHIP - A key to a Nissan vehicle was found in the 1200 block of West Holly Street behind Salem United Church of Christ and turned into Coal Township police at about noon Monday.
The owner can claim the key by contacting police at 570-644-0333.
DUI
MOUNT CARMEL - Township police charged James E. Colahan Jr., 39, of 105 Gordon St., Gordon, with two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of a controlled substance and a summary offense of driving with a suspended license for an incident that occurred at 4:35 p.m. May 14.
Mount Carmel Township Patrolman Matthew Filarski spotted Colahan driving and pulled him over because he knew from past interactions Colahan had a suspended license. He tested positive for oxycodone and temazepam.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 24 before Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones.
No breathalyzer
MOUNT CARMEL - A failure to install and use a breathalyzer system that inhibits intoxicated driving has resulted in a Sept. 24 hearing with Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones for David Leroy Dressler Jr., 38, of 700 Orange St., Selinsgrove.
Dressler was charged by Mount Carmel Township Police after he was stopped at a sobriety checkpoint at 8:40 p.m. July 20 on Route 901. According to the affidavit, Dressler said he was driving his father's vehicle, which lacked the system, because his own vehicle was having mechanical issues and he needed to get to work in Pottsville.
Multiple charges
MOUNT CARMEL - Justin M. Schoppy, 21, of 118 S. Orange St., Mount Carmel, was incarcerated in Northumberland County Prison in Sunbury after being arraigned Friday on multiple charges involving three criminal complaints filed by borough police.
Schoppy, who was committed to prison in lieu of $60,000 bail by Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones, is charged by Police Chief Todd Owens with access device fraud, theft and receiving stolen property.
He is accused of stealing an ATM card belonging to Cheryl Halcovich and using it to make withdrawals of $100 and $80 from Susquehanna Bank on May 2 and May 6, respectively.
A second complaint filed by Patrolman Jason Drumheller shows Schoppy is charged with criminal attempt to commit theft, theft and criminal mischief for breaking open a locked safe and attempting to steal $300 in cash belonging to Lori Knopp, of 342 S. Oak St., Mount Carmel, May 28.
Schoppy also was charged by Cpl. David Donkochik with burglary, criminal trespass, theft and receiving stolen property.
Police said Schoppy allegedly broke into the apartment of Melvin M. Gilbert III at 139 S. Orange St. Aug. 7 and removed approximately 30 video games for a PlayStation 3 system, an iPod Touch, a 32-gig plastic case cover, $200 in cash and $20 in coins.
