Simple assault

MOUNT CARMEL - Dustin Rogers, 18, of 38 N. Maple St., Apt. 3, was charged with simple assault and harassment following the investigation into an assault at 6:55 p.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of West Fig Street.

Borough Police Patrolman Matthew Dillman reported in court documents that a 16-year-old juvenile came to the police station holding his head. The juvenile told police he was walking in the 200 block of West Fig Street with another person when he heard someone coming up behind him. He didn't look but was struck in the head with something that caused him to fall to the ground. When he stood up, he observed Rogers running away and saw no one else in area.

Rogers was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones and placed in Northumberland County Prison on $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

Car hits bear

SPRING TOWNSHIP - No one was injured in a one-vehicle crash at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Route 522, just east of Firestone Lane.

State police at Selinsgrove report a 2005 Hyundai Elantra, driven by John Klinger Jr., 39, of Sunbury, was traveling south on Route 522, when a bear attempted to cross Route 522 from the right side of the roadway. The bear ran in front of Klinger's vehicle and the two collided.

PFA violation

KULPMONT - Thomas F. McGovern, 43, of 830 Spruce St., Kulpmont, was charged with a protection from abuse order violation after he allegedly spoke with his son on the phone on Aug. 24 and 26. According to the order, he is not allowed to have any contact with his children or their mother.

McGovern will have a hearing on the charge in Northumberland County Court.
