TREMONT - Two men were taken into custody Thursday after allegedly being involved in a robbery at Miner's Bank and leading police on a brief car chase, eventually crashing along I-81.
Trooper John Sleboda Jr. of the Schuylkill Haven station said that after the 9:22 a.m. heist at the bank at 29 E. Main St., Tremont, the robber and another man fled, eventually finding their way to the nearby interstate, where they began to travel south.
A description of the vehicle, a silver minivan, was broadcast and the van was spotted traveling south around mile marker 80, 20 miles south of the Schuylkill County line.
Sleboda said a traffic stop was attempted but the driver fled south at a high speed until he crashed into the median near mile marker 74.5. Both the driver of the van and his passenger, believed to be the man who committed the heist, suffered nonlife-threatening injuries.
Both were taken to Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center for treatment and remained there Thursday night. State police at Schuylkill Haven said the men were scheduled to be arraigned late Thursday night.
No other information on the robbery, or whether a weapon was used, was available Thursday night.
Sleboda said it is not known if the two men taken into custody were also responsible for two other heists in the area since June.
He said the investigation into those robberies is ongoing.
