Drivers identified
SHAMOKIN - The school bus driver and car operator involved in an accident Tuesday morning near the intersection of Lincoln and Market streets have been identified by police.
Chief of Police Darwin Tobias III reported John B. Rowe, 74, of 1321 W. Arch St., Coal Township, was driving an International school bus containing 24 students at Shamokin Area Middle/High School west on Lincoln Street at 7:20 a.m. when he stopped for a traffic light at Market Street. The bus was then struck in the rear by a car operated by Darnell Lewis, 18, of 33 N. Franklin St., Shamokin, who was cited for following a vehicle too closely.
A 14-year-old female passenger in Lewis' car from Shamokin suffered a minor head injury and was taken by private vehicle for a medical evaluation. Rowe, Lewis and the students escaped injury.
The bus sustained minor damage. The car sustained extensive front-end damage and was towed from the scene.
