Burn barrel fire

COAL TOWNSHIP - Township fire personnel responded to a minor burn barrel fire shortly after 2 a.m. Monday at 1746 Mohawk St.

Personnel were at the scene until 2:24 a.m.

Hit and run

COAL TOWNSHIP - Police here are investigating a hit-and run accident at 8:52 p.m. Saturday in the second patch of Bear Valley Road.

Police said a blue sport utility vehicle was traveling east on Bear Valley Road toward Shamokin when it exited the road and struck a traffic sign along the eastbound shoulder. The driver then fled east on Bear Valley Road.

Anyone with information about the accident is urged to call Coal Township police at 644-0333.

Route 125 crash

BURNSIDE - No injuries were reported in a two-vehicle accident Saturday morning along Route 125 just south of this Coal Township village.

Patrolman Joshua Wynn said Allie Mace, 17, of 1605 Gap View Road, Dauphin, was traveling south at 2:51 a.m. when her 2011 Ford sedan was rear-ended by a 2013 Ford truck operated by Aaron Tyson, 31, of 4558 Upper Road, Shamokin.

Mace's car spun clockwise and struck an embankment on the southbound side of the road.

Tyson told police he wasn't paying attention while texting, causing his truck to rear-end the car.

Tyson was cited by Wynn for careless driving and texting while driving.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Coal Township police were assisted by Shamokin police, AREA Services Ambulance and Coal Township firefighters.

One-vehicle accident

MOUNT CARMEL TOWNSHIP - A one-vehicle accident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. Monday afternoon along Sagon Road, State Route 2026, when a Buick LaCrosse driven by Doris Machuzak, left the roadway and glanced off of one tree and hit another head-on before it came to rest down an embankment along the roadway.

According to Mount Carmel Township Patrolman Dan Politza, Machuzak, 138 E. Melrose St., Marion Heights, was traveling west on Sagon Road when a motorist traveling east noticed Machuzak's vehicle swerving. After the witness passed Machuzak, they noticed they could not see her in their rearview mirror.

The witness doubled back and found Machuzak's vehicle down the embankment and called 911. Machuzak was taken by AREA Services to Geisinger, Danville, with head and leg injuries. She was not wearing her seatbelt. The accident closed down Sagon road to through traffic in the area of the accident for approximately one hour while the scene was cleared.

In addition to Mount Carmel Township Police and AREA Services, responding to the scene were Kulpmont East End No.1. The vehicle was recovered and taken from the scene by Joe's Body Shop, Natalie.
