Multiple charges
MOUNT CARMEL - A borough man was charged with two counts of institutional vandalism after he allegedly urinated and defecated inside a holding cell at the Mount Carmel Township police station.
Kaleb Alexander Roney, 20, of 504 W. Second St., Mount Carmel, was taken into custody by township patrolman Kelly Campbell around 1 a.m. Friday after Grace Pivarnik, of 127 W. Melrose St., Marion Heights, reported that Roney was attempting to break into her house. Campbell located Roney at the scene and found him to smell of alcohol and campfire. His eyes were red and glassy, his speech was slurred and he was having a difficult time maintaining his balance.
Campbell found a small green baggie containing green leafy substance later identified as marijuana, a homemade smoking device made out of aluminum foil and a lighter in Roney's pockets. He transported to Roney to the Mount Carmel Township Police Department and placed him in a holding cell.
Later, Campbell heard what sounded like running water so he checked on Roney and saw him urinating in the cell against the concrete block wall. While he wrote up a complaint about the urination, he began to smell feces, so he checked on Roney again and saw him defecating on a wooden seat within the cell area. Neither time did the defendant ask to use the restroom, said Campbell in the affidavit.
Roney was arraigned on Friday in front of Magisterial District Judge Hugh A. Jones. In addition to the two counts of institutional vandalism, he was also charged with criminal trespass, loitering and prowling at nighttime, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, false identification to law enforcement authorities, underage drinking and public drunkenness. He was released on $5,000 bail.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for today.
