Two-vehicle crash
COAL TOWNSHIP - Three people were injured in a crash at 12:40 p.m. Saturday on Route 61 near the Ames Plaza intersection.
Township Police said a 2000 Chevrolet Colorado pick-up truck, operated by Stanley J. Moser, 43, of 119 N. Chestnut St., Kulpmont, was traveling north on Route 61 and allegedly failed to stop at a red light at the intersection. When he went through the intersection, the truck hit a 2012 Jeep Patriot, driven by Elizabeth Hepler, 88, of 607 McKnight St., Gordon, who was proceeding from the jug handle to turn left onto Route 61 south.
Both drivers and Hepler's passenger, Norman Mallams, 88, also of 607 McKnight St., Gordon, were transported by AREA Services ambulance for treatment: Moser to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital and Hepler and Mallams to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. All three were treated and released. Both vehicles were severely damaged and had to be towed from the scene. Moser's vehicle is owned by Thomas and Anna Moser, of Main Street, Locust Gap.
Police report Moser will be cited for a red light violation. Assisting police were members of the Coal Township Fire Department and traffic was detoured around the scene for approximately 30 minutes.
