Possible phone scam
COAL TOWNSHIP - Police here are investigating a possible telephone scam.
Florence Quinn, 69, of Sheridan Court Apartments, said she received a call from a woman with a foreign accent claiming to be working for the fraud division of Quinn's bank. Quinn said the woman knew most of her information, but was trying to solicit more information before hanging up when Quinn's son requested to speak with her.
Police warned residents not to provide any information over the telephone if they are not certain with whom they are speaking.
Brothers charged in assault
COAL TOWNSHIP - Two brothers, one of whom remains at large, have been charged with simple assault and harassment by Coal Township police in connection with the assault of a Tharptown woman and her fiance Thursday night.
Police reported Joshua Broscious, 20, of 75 Center St., Tharptown, is accused of assaulting Lisa Burd, 23, of 233 Center St., Tharptown, at 9:22 p.m. at Burd's residence. The assault stemmed from an argument between Burd and Broscious' brother, Shane Broscious, 26, also of 233 Center St., Tharptown.
Police said Adam Trego, 28, of 233 Center St., Tharptown, who is Burd's fiance and a brother of Shane Broscious' fiance, was assaulted by the Broscious brothers when he attempted to stop Joshua Broscious from assaulting Burd.
Trego suffered injuries and was transported by AREA Services Ambulance to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital, where he underwent emergency room treatment before being released.
The Broscious brothers fled the scene just before police arrived at the home.
Shane Broscious was taken into custody Friday. He was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones and released on $5,000 unsecured bail. His brother, who is wanted on a warrant, remains at large.
Teen slammed into lockers
COAL TOWNSHIP - A 12-year-old Shamokin boy will be charged by Coal Township police with simple assault and harassment for allegedly picking up a 12-year-old Coal Township male and slamming him into lockers at Shamokin Area Middle/High School at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 25.
Police said the victim was knocked unconscious and suffered a concussion.
Hay set on fire
BURNSIDE - Police reported someone damaged a rear window on a Caterpillar D11 bulldozer and set 22 bales of hay on fire between noon Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday at a mine reclamation site, approximately three miles east of the entrance to the AOAA park off Route 125.
The damage was reported at 6:45 a.m. Friday by an employee of Morgan Excavation of Mount Union, which is the company working with the state Department of Environmental Protection at the site.
Total damage is estimated at $2,500.
Disorderly conduct
SHAMOKIN - A 17-year-old Shamokin boy has been cited by Patrolman Shane Mowery for disorderly conduct for allegedly screaming and cursing in the 100 block of North Marshall Street at 9:43 p.m. Friday.
Steals beer, cooler
RIVERSIDE - Samuel Peter Jones, 19, of 11th Street, Danville, has been charged by Riverside Patrolman Kerry Parkes with stealing a cooler full of beer owned by John Weller of Harrisburg.
According to a criminal complaint, Jones and a juvenile allegedly removed the cooler from the bed of Weller's pickup truck between Nov. 8 and Nov. 9 while it was parked in front of the residence of Weller's daughter at 1302 Avenue F.
Police said the beer and cooler are valued at $167.
Jones was arraigned Thursday by Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones of Mount Carmel on charges of theft from a motor vehicle, corruption of minors, receiving stolen property and criminal conspiracy. He was released in lieu of $5,000 unsecured bail.
Additional charges
MOUNT CARMEL - Additional charges of possession with intent to deliver 66 packets of heroin, possession with intent to deliver 28 methadone tablets, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal use of communication facility have been filed by Patrolman David Stamets against Christian Lee Kehler, 36, of 1114 N. Shamokin St., Shamokin.
The charges relate to an Oct. 17 vehicle stop on Route 901 between Excelsior and the former Boylan's Service Station in which Kehler was previously charged with drug-related offenses. Police found the additional heroin and methadone and a used hypodermic needle during a search of Kehler's vehicle.
Kehler was arraigned on the additional charges Friday by Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones and recommitted to Northumberland County Prison in Sunbury in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Safety seat check
HUMMELS WHARF - Child passenger safety technicians from the state police station at Selinsgrove will conduct a child passenger safety seat check from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Hummels Wharf Fire Company.
The check will be held in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Click-It-Or-Ticket campaign that runs until Dec. 1.
Anyone interested in having their child passenger safety seat checked for proper installations or needs assistance in installing a safety seat is encouraged to attend the free event. No appointment is necessary.
Retail theft
ZERBE TOWNSHIP - Lewis Andrew Hine, 33, of Sunbury, has been charged by Trooper Daniel Wilk of state police at Stonington with retail theft for allegedly removing a baseball bat and a gray hooded sweatshirt from the Dollar General Store along Route 225 at 12:45 p.m. Sunday.
Attempted theft
VALLEY TOWNSHIP - State police at Milton are searching today for two males between the ages of 18 and 25 who attempted to steal a $300 Stihl MS 180 chain saw owned by Michael Campbell, 47, of Subury, from Elf Mountain Christmas Tree Farm along Sugar Camp Road in this Montour County township.
Police said the males, who were wearing blue jeans, racing jerseys and helmets, were riding four-wheelers at 10:40 a.m. Friday when they approached the back of Campbell's truck and attempted to steal his chain saw and one-gallon gas can. Police reported a tree farm employee who was dragging a tree toward the truck spotted one of the males walking away from the truck with the saw. The employee yelled at him to drop the saw, which he did before fleeing with the other actor on their four-wheelers.
