Alleged child abuse
MOUNT CARMEL - Steven R. Markowitz, 46, of 40 S. Vine St., Mount Carmel, was charged by Cpl. David Donkochik with two counts of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person involving an April 19 incident at his home.
Markowitz is accused of placing his 3-month-old son in a vibrating chair after the infant continued to cry. Police said Markowitz turned the vibration mode on and after a minute or two, he noticed something wasn't right since the child's right arm was "out of whack or twitching."
Markowitz told police he then left the child downstairs as he went to get his girlfriend and the infant's mother, Leann Emburg, who was upstairs. After Emburg came down to check on the child, Markowitz dialed 911 for an ambulance after realizing abnormal behavior from the child.
The child was transported by ambulance April 19 to the emergency room at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville and during a visit two days later to Geisinger Knapper Clinic, it was suspected that the infant was having seizures.
Upon further testing, medical officials determined the child's injuries were consistent with child abuse rather than being accidental.
