High rise fire

SHAMOKIN - City police and fire units answered a second-alarm fire call shortly before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday when smoke from a garbage can fire filled a seventh story apartment at the Harold Thomas High Rise at East Dewart and Sunbury streets.

The fire was quickly brought under control by maintenance workers and firefighters. Fire crews were in service for a short time and there was no need for evacuation of the building.

Coal Township, Kulpmont and Ralpho Township fire units were on standby until the scene was cleared.

Retail theft

COAL TOWNSHIP - Robin Marie Kelley, 50, of 1330 Spruce St., Ashland, was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III Thursday morning on three felony counts of retail theft involving a May 25 incident at Walmart Supercenter.

Police said Kelley, who was previously charged multiple times with retail theft in Pennsylvania and Florida and has used different names, is accused of removing tags from hats valued at $2.88 and using the tags for clothing valued at $29.76 that she placed in bags at a self-checkout counter. The defendant then placed another piece of clothing valued at $9.88 into the bag without ringing it up for payment.

Police reported Kelley also rang up $2.14 for paper plates and included an additional larger pack of paper plates valued at $6.27 that she mixed in with the other package, but never paid for the additional plates.

Kelley was detained by loss prevention associates after she left the store with the merchandise and claimed the incident was a misunderstanding and was willing to pay for the merchandise.

The charges were filed by Coal Township Patrolman David Sage.

Kelley was released on $5,000 unsecured supervised bail.

DUI charges

SHAMOKIN - Nicole M. Koss, 29, of 1662 Continental Blvd., Danville, was charged by Cpl. Jarrod Scandle with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of driving under a combination of drugs relating to an April 29 incident in the 300 block of North Shamokin Street.

Police said Koss had a blood-alcohol content of .273 percent and also had Alprazolam in her blood system.

Theft charge

SHAMOKIN - A theft charge was filed by Cpl. Jarrod Scandle against Daniel J. Bacorn, 22, of 45 Eagle Lane, Ulster, involving a May 24 incident at 169 N. Grant St.

Bacorn is accused of stealing an LG Sunrise cell phone owned by Skie Campbell.

Disorderly conduct

SHAMOKIN - Megan Lee Katalinas, 30, and Eric D. Smith, 43, both of 913 E. Chestnut St., Shamokin, were charged by Chief of Police Darwin Tobias III with disorderly conduct, harassment and public drunkenness in connection with a May 27 disturbance.

Police said the couple engaged in a loud verbal argument and physical altercation with each other and also were involved in a loud verbal argument with Albert Katalinas in the middle of their street shortly before 9 p.m.
