Oven fire

KULPMONT - A malfunctioning oven caused minor charring to a wall at 1135 Popular St. Wednesday afternoon. Fire crews cleared the scene within 45 minutes after checking the house.

Waives hearing

MOUNT CARMEL - Joshua Seth Kovaschetz, 34, of 2273 Mile Hill Road, P.O. Box 301, Sunbury, waived to court Wednesday charges of hit and run, following a vehicle too closely, careless driving, failure to provide immediate notice of an accident to police and operating a vehicle without an official certificate of inspection.

The charges were filed by Trooper Justin Rosboschil of state police at Stonington in connection with a Feb. 7 two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Sunbury and Whiteknight roads in Riverside.

Kovaschetz was ordered by Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones to appear for plea court June 23 at Northumberland County Courthouse, Sunbury, where he can plead guilty or no contest, or seek a trial by pleading not guilty.

Case sent to county court

MOUNT CARMEL - Joseph M. Barnyock, 69, of Branchdale, waived to court Wednesday two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, careless driving and failure to drive in a single lane involving a Jan. 12 accident on Route 901 at the "S Turns" near Locust Gap.

Barnyock was ordered by Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones to appear for plea court June 23 at Northumberland County Courthouse, Sunbury, where he can plead guilty or no contest, or seek a trial by pleading not guilty.

ID theft

LOWER MAHANOY TOWNSHIP - State police at Stonington reported Amanda Lee Thomas, of Dalmatia, discovered a credit card was unlawfully acquired using her identity in April 2007, according to a routine inspection of her credit history.

Bicyclist hit by car

SUNBURY - Police here are searching for the driver and vehicle involved in a hit-and-run accident at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Packer and North Third streets.

Police said a 2003 or 2004 silver Ford Focus hatchback operated by a female struck bicyclist Brandon Reigle, 17, of Susquehanna Avenue, Sunbury. Police did not indicate if Reigle was injured or hospitalized.

Police said a black male with long hair was a back-seat passenger in the car, which was last seen in the 700 block of North Third Street traveling toward Reagan Street. The hit-and-run vehicle should have minor damage to its passenger side front and a possible dented hood.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Sunbury police at 570-286-4584.

Burglary

WEST MILTON - State police at Milton reported more than $2,500 worth of copper plumbing was removed from several cabins and a cottage at Central Oak Heights Rental Cabins/Cottage Community, 75 Heritage Road, West Milton, between Oct. 15 and Monday.

Theft by deception

DEWART - Trista Lebarron, of Dewart, told state police at Milton that someone defrauded her of $1,450 in a transaction for a dog earlier this month.

Three escape injury

SHAMOKIN DAM - Three area residents escaped injury in a two-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon on Route 61 in this Snyder County borough.

State police at Selinsgrove reported Angela M. Baylor, 33, of Coal Township, was driving a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee west at 1:55 p.m. when her vehicle struck the rear of a 2008 Toyota Tacoma operated by Michael J. Stahl, 39, of Paxinos, who came to a stop in traffic due to a crash on the Route 61 ramp to Routes 11-15 south.

Baylor, Stahl and a passenger in Stahl's vehicle, Jeremy Stahl, 35, of Sunbury, escaped injury.

Heroin overdose

COAL TOWNSHIP - Brittany Brown, 23, of 1111 W. Mulberry St., Coal Township, who overdosed on heroin at her home April 7 and was transported by ambulance to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, has been charged by Patrolman Christopher Lapotsky with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said a syringe was found in Brown's purse.

DUI

COAL TOWNSHIP - Patrolman Edward Purcell has charged John D. Kodack, 31, of 1528 W. Montgomery St., Coal Township, with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, accidents involving damage to an unattended vehicle or property, failure to give immediate notice of an accident, reckless driving and a stop sign violation relating to a Feb. 25 hit-and-run accident at State and Jackson streets.

Police reported Kodack had a blood-alcohol content of .226 percent.

Simple assault

SHAMOKIN - Ryan Kirchman, 23, of 216 S. Franklin St., Shamokin, was charged by Patrolman Raymond Siko II with simple assault and harassment for allegedly shoving and choking his girlfriend, Maria Hill, and grabbing her 7-year-old son by the neck and dragging him across the floor at 7:37 a.m. Wednesday at their residence.

Kirchman was arraigned at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III and committed to Northumberland County Prison in Sunbury in lieu of $5,000 bail.
