Hit and run
RIVERSIDE - State police at Stonington reported charges are pending against Joshua Scott Kovaschetz, 34, of Mile Hill Road, Sunbury, in connection with a hit-and-run accident Friday morning at the intersection of Sunbury and Whiteknight roads.
Police said Kovaschetz and David John Winnie, 21, of Nescopeck, were both traveling west on Sunbury Road at 2:19 a.m. when Kovaschetz proceeded to accelerate and hit Winnie's vehicle from behind. Kovaschetz then lost control of his vehicle, which exited the south side of the road and hit a utility pole. Kovaschetz fled the scene prior to emergency personnel arriving.
Assault at academy
COAL TOWNSHIP - A 14-year-old male from York has been charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment relating to a disturbance at 3:35 p.m. Tuesday at Northwestern Academy.
The academy resident is accused of throwing a chair at staff member Aaron Deitz before hitting him in the face and head several times, causing Deitz to suffer cuts to his forehead and forearm.
The charges were filed through Northumberland County Juvenile Court.
Hit and run
COAL TOWNSHIP - Daniel Charowsky, 45, of 1500 Pulaski Ave., Coal Township, reported a vehicle struck his 2005 Ford Mustang between 2 and 4 p.m. Thursday on Sherman Street.

SUV strikes residences
COAL TOWNSHIP - Two homes at 1780 and 1782 Tioga St. sustained minor damage to their front foundations and siding when a 2008 Ford Expedition crashed into them Thursday night.
Coal Township police reported Joann Rakus, 40, of 1050 1/2 W. Arch St., Coal Township, was operating the Expedition owned by Michael Noll, 43, of 1775 Tioga St., Coal Township. Police said Rakus pulled out from a parking spot on Tioga Street at about 6 p.m. when she lost control of the vehicle, which crossed over the street and struck the residences.
The Expedition then struck a 2010 Ford Focus owned by Angelic Christian and Joseph Wisgo, of 1780 Tioga St.
The Expedition and Ford Focus sustained moderate damage and were towed from the scene. Rakus escaped injury.
DUI
MOUNT CARMEL TOWNSHIP - Daniel J. Renn Jr., 33, of 116 E. Melrose St., Marion Heights, was charged by Patrolman Kelly Campbell with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under suspension, a lighting violation and driving without a license involving a Nov. 6 incident on the Natalie Mountain (Route 54).
According to a criminal complaint filed at the office of Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones, Renn refused to submit to chemical testing. Renn told police he had consumed several alcoholic beverages and used morphine and possibly some other substances on the night of the incident.
DUI offense
MOUNT CARMEL - Patrolman Justin Stelma charged Douglas J. Kraynak, 23, of 131 W. Clermont St., Marion Heights, with driving under the influence of alcohol and careless driving relating to a Dec. 20 incident in the first block of South Market Street.
Police said Kraynak had a blood-alcohol content of .219 percent.
Cell phone theft
MOUNT CARMEL - Patrick Tobin, 49, of 218 N. Third St., Minersville, was charged by Lt. Christopher Buhay with theft of lost or mislaid property.
Police said Tobin is accused of keeping a cell phone belonging to Robin Brown, of 46 N. Maple St., Mount Carmel, after Brown dropped the phone in Tobin's vehicle after being left off at her residence on Jan. 19. Brown told police she called Tobin numerous times in an attempt to regain her phone, but Tobin never returned her messages.
