EXCELSIOR - One man was taken into custody and seven others transported to area medical centers following a two-vehicle crash Monday on Route 901 in Mount Carmel Township.
James Fleury was identified by a township police officer as the driver of a Ford Windstar that collided with a Ford Bronco on its driver-side about 5:20 p.m. in the northbound lane.
Fleury underwent field sobriety testing at the scene and was handcuffed and transported to the township station. However, Patrolman Matthew Filarski, the investigating officer, said Fleury would not face charges for impaired driving and was not arrested.
Filarski would not offer further comment on the identifies of the accident victims or on how the crash occurred.
There were five occupants in the Bronco and three in the minivan, police said. At least four of the occupants were children.
Medical personnel said the injured were bound for Geisinger Medical Center and Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital.
Fleury was the lone occupant not transported to an area hospital immediately following the collision.
The Bronco was towing an empty car dolly, and there was a disabled Ford Taurus wagon on the southbound berm.
